What is Shiatsu?
The word "Shiatsu" means "finger-pressure" in Japanese. It is an oriental healing art, based on stimulating the flow of Chi (life energy) through the body. Shiatsu shares its roots with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and uses a range of meridians (energy channels) and points (Tsubos), including those used in acupuncture. It is a gentle but powerful therapy which combines dynamic stretches, rotations, massage and acupressure to smooth the flow of Chi and move the body/mind/spirit towards a more harmonious state.
Shiatsu is an excellent tonic to maintain good health, promote relaxation, and may help many stress-related problems. Its comforting and unconditional support through touch is beneficial for dealing with difficult life transitions or emotional challenges. Sessions last approximately one hour during which the client wears loose-fitting garments and lays on a futon on the floor. Some aspects of the treatment may cause a little short-lived discomfort or highlight tender areas, often where energy is blocked, but an overall sense of wholeness usually follows. After treatment, clients often feel both relaxed and energised, with a sensation of having awoken from restful sleep. Limited availability at Wells clinic Monday evenings and some local home visits by special arrangement. |
